Important Information You Should Know About Byetta & Januvia

Byetta

Byetta is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes, when used with a diet and exercise program. Sometimes other diabetes medications are used with Byetta if necessary. Manufactured by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Byetta can lead to serious side effects in patients who take it including inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Cases of pancreatitis can potentially be severe and lead to death. It can also be dangerous for people who have serious kidney problems. In addition there has also been an increase in the number of cases of thyroid cancer in patients taking Byetta.

Januvia

Januvia is an oral diabetes medication produced by Merck & Co. that also helps patients with type 2 diabetes to control blood sugar levels. Like Byetta it works by controlling the amount of insulin your body produces after eating thereby allowing it to keep sugar levels at a normal and safe amount in the blood. Patients taking Januvia are exposed to dangerous side effects like pancreatitis and kidney problems.

Data From FDA Reveals Potential Dangers of Byetta and Januvia

Both Byetta and Januvia help to control glucose in the blood by encouraging production of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). Unfortunately recent studies have suggested that patients who are taking the drugs may have an increased risk of developing pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. According to data compiled from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration between 2004 and 2009, researchers found that there was a six times more likelihood of pancreatitis cases in patients taking Januvia and Byetta and nearly three times more cases of pancreatic cancer. An increase in reported cases of thyroid cancer in patients taking Byetta was also noted.

Januvia and Byetta have been linked to these complications according to studies
  • pancreatitis - severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, fast heart rate; or
  • urinating less than usual or not at all;
  • swelling, weight gain, feeling short of breath; or
  • severe skin reaction -- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.

FDA Revises Labels for Byetta and Januvia

In 2008, FDA issued a revision for Byetta warning labels to include risks for pancreatitis and kidney problems. In September 25, 2009 the FDA issued a revision to the warning label of the drug Januvia or regarding Januvia side effects, including Januvia pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis and Byetta thyroid cancer.

Lawsuits have been filed against Merck & Co. and Amylin Pharmaceuticals for failing to adequately test the drug before it was released into the marketplace. The lawsuit alleges that the manufacturers failed to adequately monitor patients using the drug or inform doctors and patients of the serious risk of developing pancreatitis
